What is it?The "Exit Ticket" strategy is a short activity at the end of the class period where the students show what they've learned. It's important that the activity is short and to the point. It needs to only cover the most important concept that you are trying to teach and it can do so in different formats like short answer and multiple choice. It needs to be easy to review. The "Exit Ticket" can be used to assess learning and assess your teaching. It can provide powerful insight as to what students aren't grasping and can lead you to changing your lesson to accomodate for these mistakes.
Why does it work? This strategy can be used to normalize error. The wrong answers can be used to teach the class what someone has done wrong and can help everyone understand the right way to answer a specific question. It's an effective strategy because it can enforce effective transitions because not all kids will get done at the same time. It also keeps students on task if they expect to have to answer a question based on the lesson afterwards.
Example:An effective exit ticket should only have one to three questions. It can be just one word problem based on the lesson that requires students to use something they've learned that day.
